A Rica blog post about travelling by train as a wheelchair user: top 8 tips for successful travel
Chris_Rica! After read out your post I just visit the blog and read it entirely. I was happy to see it because you have shared the great post about the travelling by train as a wheelchair user. The all tips that you shared in your post are worthwhile for all disabled persons and I am sure they will like your blog post.
I'd also add, check the train company. They have very different ideas of "wheelchair space". For instance, from Telford to Bham the trains are either Arriva or london Midland. Experience has shown to plan to catch the LM when poss. Its slower but with more room for wheelchair. Arriva is tight, do-able but tight.
I do not use the train very often but in the last 6 months have used the Merthyr Tydfil to Cardiff on the valley line on 3 occasions with Arriva Trains and I must rate them 1st class with no issues on being offered a ramp both on and off the train with no waiting
No issues at all the staff both at Merthyr and Cardiff were extremly helpfull
