National Guidance for Measuring for Provision of Minor Assistive Devices
RESEARCH INVITATION

We would like to invite you to take part in the second stage of the research project if you have experience of using minor assistive devices (such as that provided for toilet, bath, bed, chair or stair transfers).
The purpose of the second stage is to establish the appropriateness of the content and presentation of the written guidance for measuring for provision of minor assistive devices. It involves silent generation of ideas, small group discussion and voting and ranking in order to determine consensus. The group members will be expert occupational therapists and service users, like yourself.
The group session will last up to 2 hours at the Disabled Living Foundation in London.

Shirley Russell, project worker from the British Polio Fellowship and a service user, will be available to brief and prepare you before the group discussion. This preparation will take approximately 30 minutes. Shirley will also discuss any adjustments that you might require and her contact details are shown at the end of the email.

The proposed dates for the groups are:
10:30 – 13:00 14:00 – 16:30
2nd of July
30th of July
31st of July
1st of August


We will also reimburse any reasonable travel expenses incurred for attending the session including expenses for participants travelling to London from anywhere in England. We will thank you for your participation with a £15 gift voucher at the end of the study
The research team are members of the School of Health Sciences and Social Care, at Brunel University and the British Polio Fellowship. This research project has been reviewed and research ethics approval has been obtained by the Research Ethics Committee of the School of Health Sciences and Social Care at Brunel University and the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS).

I have two issues here.

What exactly are you looking for?

The purpose of the second stage is to establish the appropriateness of the content and presentation of the written guidance for measuring for provision of minor assistive devices. It involves silent generation of ideas, small group discussion and voting and ranking in order to determine consensus.

If this is an example of 'Plain English' - then you will have a problem with people understanding written instructions in my view.

Location - I realise that it's handy for the organisers to use venues in London. But have you ever thought of using other locations like Manchester? There is a strong disabled community here who would be happy to assist if asked.

I will post another ad today explaining better what we're looking for, and hopefuly in a more comprehensive way.

In regards to location, we are collaborating with the DLF in London and all academics involved in the study are located in London as well. As we'd need the participants to take a series of measurements on site, this restricts our options for venues.

RESEARCH INVITATION

We would like your assistance to help us make the provision of assistive technology better so that it can enhance independent living. We need you to help us to work with occupational therapists (OT) on a better way forward so that the assistive aids some of you are given are not out in a cupboard or in the garage!!!
It will involve attending one of the groups at the Disabled Living Foundation to give your views about the measurement of assistive aids you may require enabling us to have a better understanding and the issues.

All reasonable costs will be reimbursed including travel expenses. If you are coming by car there is parking available in front of the building. A thank you £15 00 gift voucher will be given at the end of the session.

The research team is members of the School of Health and Social Care at Brunel University and Ethical Permission has been granted.

The purpose of this research : To develop national guidance for measuring the home environment to facliate self assessment for minor devises (to go on ASK SARA on DLF website).

What is Involved: Taking measurements with written guidance, App, and without guidance of bed, chair, stairs, toilet, and bath.
Should take no more than 60 minutes.

Please turn up between 10-12am or 1-3 pm on 16 and or 17 th April ( one day only)

This project has been funded by an award from the UK Occupational Therapy Research Foundation of the College of Occupational Therapists (COT). The research team includes members of the Department of Clinical Sciences at Brunel University and the British Polio Fellowship. The research is conducted in collaboration with the Disabled Living Foundation and the Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Partnership Trust.

There are five stages to the research project, with experts in the provision of assistive technology, occupational therapists and service users being asked to take part in different stages. We are now at the fifth stage (final stage) of the study and we are asking for final on-line feedback from members of the public and health professionals who are involved in provision of assistive equipment.
