The simple answer to your question the government would say £30 million claimed illegal is fraud and you have to cut out fraud no matter the costs.
We of course know this to be wrong but then again we are going through a massive cuts to welfare./
Whenever statistics come up, there is always the thought that there are statistical statistics on statistics.
The bottom line is the only way to really cut the welfare bill is to create jobs and that pay well to avoid the Govt subsidising greedy employers and private landlords.
The bill for us is a drop in the ocean. We are just being made scapegoats.
It is nothing to do with fraud. Fraud is for those wealthy that can afford it.

Fraud matters to us all because each time somebody is found out it hits on all of us because the public says another one, it matters to government as well.
Labour spent £80 billion in it's three terms getting 200,000 people back to work, Thatcher spent nothing and got the same number of people back to work, reason well people who go sick get better they return to work, those people who would normally spend a year off sick then return to work were counted by Blair as returning to work because of his spending.
Your talking about £100 million Blair spent £80 billion today the majority of the disabled who returned to work are now unemployed again.

What they call fraud in the benefit system is for the most part better termed 'oversights' and 'miscalculations'.
It is a lot to spend on 'oversights' and 'miscalculations'.
True they will spend ridiculous amounts to recoup e.g. ten pounds from someone who has been found to be receiving £37, when they conclude it should have been £27).
Sickness benefits are hard to get. If there were fraud it would have to involve medical professionals etc. It's unlikely. They are doubting the wrong people.
The UK does have more benefits that are not linked to income, than other European coutries.
There would be a great number of votes lost if they cut child benefit from wealthy families (more than planned) or if they made people pay for childbirth costs. Childbirth is NOT considered 'illness' in many other developed countries.
I am not defending government, DWP or ATOS here, but surely the cost of the contract is fixed no matter what the results are? So if they found no fraud they would still get the £100 million? Thus, finding £30 million claimed illegally is a result.

I didn't see where it said illegally, it just said cut.
A large part of the £30m is from cutting benefits not from fraud which is a tiny amount.
If you are found fit for work they save £29 pw wrag component, they still have to pay £71 JSA.
The thing is, if you are on JSA, is it not an income related benefit? So you get free prescriptions etc? So the £29 saving is probably lost again through that.

No mention has been made for the 'bonus' paid to ATOS for each claimant removed from benefits, or is this just a rumour?
