The EU Access City Award recognizes cities for their efforts to remove barriers to access in key aspects of everyday life. It highlights the most successful initiatives that allow people with disabilities and older people to participate fully in society and to enjoy their fundamental rights on an equal footing with others. The award covers 4 key areas of accessibility:

* the built environment and public spaces
* transport and related infrastructure
* information and communication, including new technologies (ICTs)
* public facilities and services.

The fourth edition of the Award is now open. Applications can be made up until 10 September 2013. The European Commission encourages cities with over 50 000 inhabitants from all Member States to present their activities and strategies designed to make cities barrier-free, better places to live for everyone. It is an opportunity for EU cities to showcase and share their work and plans on accessibility.
