    Ill health retirement

    Hi January 2015 I was diagnosed with cancer had operation February went back to work in November for four weeks as I was ill again my cancer had spread to my lympnodes in my armpit. I decided to apply for ill health retirement which I was turned down I'm a bus driver but dvla took my license off me for 3years as it's expected to travel to my brain so dvla say. Work tried to pay me off two mths ago with six weeks pay and expected me to sign dotted line off course I didn't and told them there offer was disgusting since that they sent me for interview which I didn't get. Found out today they can't do that as they have to make adjustments for me also went to my gp today he told me to appeal the ill health retirement do I need to go to solicitor to do this. Being a cancer patient with 4b tumour I couldn't believe I was turned down I give all my medical information to ill health dr. I live in Northern Ireland.

    Are you in a union as these will be the best people to help you. A union will be experienced in Ill Health Retirement issues.

    Sorry to hear the predicament you find yourself in. I too was a Bus driver with 33 years service in 2012, when at 62 years of age I had DVLA revoke my licence, when as a Diabetic, I went on Insulin. i think it depends a lot on the Company you work for and their attitude to your situation.
    I can say that the Company (GO AHEAD) I worked for, treat me quite well under the circumstances. Basically I was given 6 months sick pay and then, obviously with no licence there was no chance of resuming my job. So I received severance of 13 weeks and all back holiday pay, totalling (with sick pay) about £8000. Of course your length of service may be different and your company may be trying to stick to minimum legal requirements.
    One thing they normally have to do, is try to find you alternative employment within the Company, but that may not suit your circumstances. Anyway, all i can suggest is "digging your heels in," after all, you have nothing to lose.
