Leave of Absence from Uni and ESA

    Hi,

My brother was on ESA (support group) and then went to university as a full-time student and got a student loan so no longer qualified for ESA. He had been doing well but during the early part of this last term he got very ill and university advised he take a leave of absence on medical grounds.

So, he is now no longer a student and on a leave of absence. He is hoping to finish his final term of uni in the next academic year.

Does anyone know if he can claim ESA again while on a leave of absence?

    Thanks.

You say that he is no longer a student but I suspect that he may still be classed as a student from the university's point of view.

Your brother should contact welfare support at his university. They are the very best people to deal with this as there may be finances that your brother may be able to access through the university.

    Hi. Thanks for response.

During his leave of absence he is not classed as a student, which is why the halls of residence has asked him to leave, as they can only have students in the halls.

    Does that help?

I will advise him about the welfare support. Thanks,
