esa support single to esa support couple. 1 on pip enhanced/1 on dla middle care

    Hi there,

Me and my girlfriend are looking to move in together shortly.

I receive esa support group, and receive pip enhanced for mobility/daily living.

My girlfriend receives esa support group, and dla middle care/higher mobility.

how easy is to move onto couples esa??? Will we both continue to be in the support group, or do we go right back to the assessment phase, and put into the work related group???

Also, I receive severe disabilty premium for living on my own? And my girlfriend care allowance goes to her mum...

If we move in together, and make each other our as carer, would I/we still receive some/all/any of the severe disability premium.

Thanks in advance for your comment)

I am afraid that this is rather complicated.

Since you get the severe disability premium then I am presuming that you are on income based ESA. What about your girl friend? Is she on income based or contribution based? This might affect how your joint claim is worked out.

Severe disability premium can be paid for couples where they both are claiming DLA/PIP at the correct level (which you seem to be). However, another condition is that no one is claiming Carer's Allowance for you although I believe that one of you could claim CA for the other and just get the Severe Disability premium for a single claim because you are both receiving the correct level of DLA/PIP.

    See here:

I would strongly advise you to get a 'better off' calculation from CAB so that you can maximise your benefits (try to choose one with a benefits specialist)

Not sure about the ESA, but my husband and I are both on PIP daily living and get carers allowance for each other, plus income support which includes the couples rate disability premium and 2 x carer premiums. You can't get severe disability premium and carers allowance, as it has to be one or the other, though as far as I know if there are only two adults in the household and both are on PIP daily living or DLA middle or high care they can both claim SDP but I'm not sure whether this affects ESA. I don't think you can get ESA and carers allowance at the same time so you would need to talk to a benefits adviser to work out what your best option is, as you may be able to switch from ESA to CA but would need to work out which option is going to leave you better off. The good thing for us is because we're on CA and IS rather than ESA, we don't have to suffer the ESA claims process/assessments etc which is a massive relief for us.

Thanks Caley. Seems a bit of a minefield. Also got one eye on the future with regards to universal credit.

Not even sure whether we can both be on esa support as a couple, even though we are both on this at the moment as single people.

Can we both stay on esa support as a couple???

Or will one of us stay on esa support, and the other apply for income support???

And with either of the above, how much would we end up receiving when changed over to universal credit.

Hoping someone on the forum has been through the same process when moving in together, and can advise.
