Hello everyone,

It's a pleasure to meet you on the Youreable online community.

As part of MA research at Central Saint Martins, I will be hosting a community workshop for accessible private transit next Thursday 26th with Real in Tower Hamlets. Please find the details below:

Accessible by Design:
How can we improve taxi services?

NEW DATE: Thursday, November 26
11:00 - 15:00 (drop-in)
Real, Jack Dash House, 2 Lawn House Close, London E14 9YQ

This is your chance to have feedback that will be used in an effort to yield a private car hire system that is accessible and open to all and will help to shape the research of mobility in London.

Background

In the United Kingdom, over a quarter of disabled people say that they do not often have choice and control over their daily lives. Although London offers excellent transit connections and an efficient service, only 24 per cent of its Underground system is advertised as accessible. Issues arise with other modes such as the bus, black cabs, and private services including Addison Lee, and schemes such as the Freedom Pass and Access to Work — making accessible transit highly fragmented and at times unreliable.

A bespoke service does not currently exist to bridge this gap — not only in London but in cities with severely limited transit offerings. This workshop will investigate what currently works with taxi services, what does not, and what could exist if accessibility were seen as a starting point rather than a concession.

The workshop will be hosted by Andrew Persoff, an M.A. Researcher at Central Saint Martins, in conjunction with Local Voices at Real, the leading disabled people’s organisation in Tower Hamlets.

Also:

As part of the research for this project, I've also created a survey to evaluate the state of mobility and transport in various cities. If you have 10 minutes to spare, and you'd be interested in this topic, I invite you to take the survey linked below:

Your feedback is invaluable and will help shape research that aims to improve the state of accessible private transport in London and beyond.

If you have any questions, please reply to this thread or contact me at the email below (remove the parentheses).
